Like Winter

"Like Winter"

And like the winter
One day we'll walk the street
Looking like everybody else
We'll pass each other, shoulders touching.

I'll know you and you won't know me
But I'll hurt no more
Because you never knew me
Never wanted to

I was the little child
Who wanted the shiny toy?
I took to you like a candy
Like fish to water
Like a dog to a bone

Gave you everything
Never asked if you wanted it
I tethered my cart to your horse
Willing you to drag me
Wherever you so please
Through mud even

Soiled and muddled
I looked in the mirror
Stared at this image in horror
What became of royalty?
How did I come to feel so little?
Feel less of my true essence

Crown lost to the mud
Eyes wide open
Went after my crown
Found and never to be lost
I sought deliverance
Purged from my obsession

It will hurt no more
I will bleed no more
Someday, like the winter.
We'll pass by each other
Shoulders brushing
And like strangers, moving on.
